Rowan took a field trip downstairs to radiology this afternoon to get a clear picture of his insides. He’s still occasionally vomiting bile which can be a symptom of malrotation, where the intestines don’t end up in the right spot during development and which can require corrective surgery. Fortunately everything came back okay.
This evening, after a couple of days of triggering virtually all of his own breaths and not relying very much on the respirator, Rowan was extubated. It went… not great. He wasn’t really breathing on his own, which is puzzling his doctors (so far, his favourite pastime). For the time being he’s on a BiPAP machine, which is less invasive than intubation but still gives him some support.
One cool development this evening: we’re allowed to hold him again, at least for now. It made for a bit of an emotional time, as you might imagine.
