The results of yesterdays MRI have come back and we got to see them compared against his first set. Rowan’s case is puzzling the neurology team. On one hand, the brain injury seems to be healing / scarring over quickly in the past three weeks, which suggests that the seizures may have been caused by a one-time clinical event. On the other hand, they’ve identified the gene mutation associated with infant seizures and we saw the uptick of seizures last week, which suggests that the the seizures may be caused by something genetic. Neither option provides a theory for why he’s had respiratory issues… curiouser and curiouser.
Regardless of cause, the way the brain is healing seems to indicate there’s a fair chance that Rowan may have some developmental delays related to his motor skills. The medical team here is setting us up with a physiotherapy type of program in Guelph in the coming months to try to mitigate those issues if they arise.
We’re told firm diagnostic answers are really secondary to just practical treatment of the issues (at least at this point), and those seem to be under control (…at least at this point). There have been no serious respiratory events or seizures since the addition of the third medication on July 3. They’ve popped the EEG on this afternoon for another 24-hour period, but if that looks okay they plan to remove it and there are no plans to put it back on again. Today we moved out of the ICU and into the inpatient ward, one step closer to returning home. It kiiinda feels like we’re at a point where we might be measuring a return home in days as opposed to weeks, but that’s just a guess and this type of thing has a way of changing at a moment’s notice. We gave up counting chickens long ago.
